A couple weeks ago I looked at my calendar and realized I had a cocktail party lined up for the next evening. No problem. I dived into the closet only to discover, to my dismay, that I had fully stocked hangers of “fun” clothes for hanging out with the gang and even a few gowns for a night at the opera, but precious little in between.
After the initial panic wore off, I retrieved the ever-handy “Little Black Dress” from its hiding place, added earrings, necklace, and a matching shawl and shoes and I was ready to go. Accessories add that flattering focal point with the understated black dress.
But the experience gave me the jolt I needed to revisit my wardrobe and the concept of “cocktail dress.” Basically, your cocktail dress fills the gap between the formal gown and casual wear. You’re looking at silk, satin, and chiffon (the most popular choices) and a hemline between knee and calf (though you’ll see both tea-length and mini),
So there’s actually a lot of leeway and the guiding principle should always be compliment yourself. Accentuate the positive-pretty face, exquisite shoulders, tiny waist, good legs-we all know what, within the bounds of good taste, to flaunt. But it helps, if you have something elegant to start with in the closet.
Otherwise, it’s time to go shopping! Did we need an excuse?
